energy of reiki

THE SYSTEM OF REIKI is an Eastern energy technique originally developed by Mikao Usui Sensei in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. It has strong philosophical influences from Esoteric Buddhism (Tendai Buddhism), Shintoism, Shugendo, and the Martial Arts (Aiki Jutsu). In the Western World, Reiki is commonly used to balance, align, harmonize, and unblock the energy fields of the human body. Relaxation, stress reduction, increased feelings of vitality and self awareness, as well as body detoxification are often experienced as a result of a Reiki session. Reiki functions on the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Reiki energy is thought to be a complement to conventional medicine as well as to chiropractic, massage, craniosacral, homeopathic, and herbal treatments. It has also been found to be beneficial in Hospice care as well as in hospital environments. Note that the system of Reiki does not claim to be a substitute for conventional medical care.

THE WORD REIKI, in Shinjital Japanese, meaning "mysterious atmosphere/spiritual power" has been translated by Western practitioners as "UNIVERSAL LIFE ENERGY." The "Ki" of Rei-ki is said to equivalent to the "Chi" of the Chinese and the "Parana" of the Hindu. It should be noted that the system of Reiki is not a religion. Also the client does not need to believe in the concept of "universal life energy" nor practice meditation or any spiritual or religious rituals in order for the Reiki energy to be effective.

DURING A REIKI SESSION the practitioner CHANNELS REIKI ENERGY to the client using a combination of light touch and/or elevated hand techniques. A Reiki practitioner does not diagnose or claim to be able to cure an illness or any other medical condition. The practitioner relies on the wisdom of the client's body to know what it needs and wants. Therefore, when giving a Reik session, it is the intent of the practioner that the client will receive and accept whatever reiki energy his/her body currently needs. Thus, it is the client who then heals him/herself. The client can either be in a reclining position (usually the most comfortable), a seated position or standing and is always fully clothed although the removal of shoes is usually recommended.

From Usui's original Reiki System of the 20th century, today in the 21st century a vast number of Reiki Systems have developed. Today in WESTERN STYLE REIKI SYSTEMS it is usually taught that Reiki works in conjunction with the meridian energy lines, charkas and aura. The concept of the charkas and aura is actually from India and is not used in the Traditional Japanese style of Reiki. The use of Tibetan healing symbols and/or other non-traditional symbols may also be included. Some Western style practitioners also use crystals, chanting, or drumming, and others include spirit guides and the inner child in their work, which are New Age or Shamanistic additions to Reiki. The Western Style also tends to focus on a systematic set of fixed hand positions for general body treatment. And in Western Style Reiki emphasis is placed upon treatment of others as being of primary concern while the personal development of the practitioner is considered to be secondary.

TRADITIONAL JAPANESE REIKI SYSTEMS focus upon connection with the hara energy system (as in the martial arts) and the Three Diamonds (Earth Ki, Heaven Ki and Heart Ki). Emphasis is placed more upon the meditative practices, self awareness, and self growth OF THE PRACTITIONER. It becomes a type of spiritual practice of a Buddhist flavor. The actual treatment of others is considered a secondary yet very positive and wonderful outcome of this style of Reiki. And this system of Reiki concentrates more on treating specific areas of the body using intuitive style techniques rather than relaying upon fixed hand positions. It is thought that this intuitive style approach brings the practitioner into a closer energy rapport with the client.

From a CLIENT PERSPECTIVE, do not be overly concerned about which Reiki system your practitioner uses to channel Ki energy to you. The Ki energy you experience will be the same. The most important thing is that as a client you need to feel comfortable and resonate with your practictioner.
